About This Route

Built by Nicolae Ceaușescu as a military route, the Transfăgărășan crosses the Carpathian Mountains in a series of dramatic hairpin turns. Made famous by Top Gear's declaration as 'the best road in the world,' this 151-kilometer route climbs to 2,042 meters through tunnels, past glacial lakes, and along sheer cliff faces.
